1895 Morgan Dollar

The 'King of the Morgans.' No authenticated 1895 business strike is known today. Mint ledgers record 12,000; whether they were struck as dated 1895 coins, struck and later melted, or never actually coined remains an open question. The collectible reality is settled either way: a date set runs through one of ~880 proofs.

The numbers, and what kind of numbers they are

Every figure carries its evidence class. Press a class to open the record behind it — what it rests on, by what method, and what the series says you should not conclude from it.

DELIVERED IN 1895
12,880
What the mint delivered to the Treasurer during that calendar year. The Mint counted deliveries, not dates — a coin delivered in January could have been struck the previous December.
DATED ATTRIBUTION
—
What the trade assigns to coins bearing this date. A modern allocation by an outside authority, not a federal record.
ESTIMATED SURVIVORS
400
An estimate of how many still exist in any grade, not a count of coins anyone has seen. The mint-state and gem figures beneath it are where a date's price actually lives.
AUCTION RECORD
$150,000
The highest public sale on record for this issue. One coin, one night — a ceiling, not a market.
