1892-S Morgan Dollar

The series' great conditional rarity: nearly the whole mintage circulated, AU 'sliders' abound — and the estimates of mint-state survivors are brutal either way: 135–270 (Bowers, 1993) or 1,200 in MS60+ and 64 at MS65+ (PCGS survival estimate, retrieved 2026-08-23), split oddly between near-60 coins and outright gems with almost nothing between.

The numbers, and what kind of numbers they are

Every figure carries its evidence class. Press a class to open the record behind it — what it rests on, by what method, and what the series says you should not conclude from it.

DELIVERED IN 1892
1,200,000
What the mint delivered to the Treasurer during that calendar year. The Mint counted deliveries, not dates — a coin delivered in January could have been struck the previous December.
DATED ATTRIBUTION
1,200,000
What the trade assigns to coins bearing this date. A modern allocation by an outside authority, not a federal record.
ESTIMATED SURVIVORS
120,000
An estimate of how many still exist in any grade, not a count of coins anyone has seen. The mint-state and gem figures beneath it are where a date's price actually lives.
AUCTION RECORD
$630,000
The highest public sale on record for this issue. One coin, one night — a ceiling, not a market.
