1885-CC Morgan Dollar

Second-lowest mintage — yet the GSA disbursed 148,285 of them, and an estimated 155,000–168,000 survive, nearly all uncirculated. Only ~2,000–4,000 worn examples exist: in circulated grades this is the king of Morgans, outranking even the 1893-S.

The numbers, and what kind of numbers they are

Every figure carries its evidence class. Press a class to open the record behind it — what it rests on, by what method, and what the series says you should not conclude from it.

DELIVERED IN 1885
228,000
What the mint delivered to the Treasurer during that calendar year. The Mint counted deliveries, not dates — a coin delivered in January could have been struck the previous December.
DATED ATTRIBUTION
228,000
What the trade assigns to coins bearing this date. A modern allocation by an outside authority, not a federal record.
ESTIMATED SURVIVORS
174,250
An estimate of how many still exist in any grade, not a count of coins anyone has seen. The mint-state and gem figures beneath it are where a date's price actually lives.
AUCTION RECORD
$135,125
The highest public sale on record for this issue. One coin, one night — a ceiling, not a market.
