Optics & Measurement

Loupes, scopes, scales and calipers. The tools that turn 'looks right' into a measurement.

Optics & Measurement

10× Triplet Loupe

Triplet means three cemented lens elements — corrected for colour fringing and edge distortion. A cheap single-lens loupe will show you a false doubled die. 10× is the working default; 5×–7× for overall eye appeal, 16× for die diagnostics.

Optics & Measurement

Digital Caliper, 0.01 mm

Diameter and thickness. Pairs with the Fit Finder above and with the weight check — a coin that misses on both is not a coin.

Optics & Measurement

Digital Scale, 0.01 g

Two decimal places is the floor. Weight is the cheapest counterfeit screen there is: a struck fake almost always misses the standard by more than 0.05 g. Buy one with a calibration weight and actually use it.

Optics & Measurement

Incandescent or Halogen Desk Lamp

A single-point warm light source, tilted. Diffuse LED panels flatten luster; a point source is what shows cartwheel.

Optics & Measurement

Stereo Microscope, 10×–40×

The jump from loupe to stereo scope is the biggest single upgrade in a collector's ability to see. Binocular, long working distance, its own light. This is what variety attribution and counterfeit detection actually require.
