THE STORY
Congress answered the Krugerrand era with a bullion coin wrapped in Saint-Gaudens' 1907 Liberty. The Gold Eagle became the standard US retail gold unit: legal tender at a nominal $50, IRA-eligible, and backed by law requiring its gold be newly mined in America. At current prices one coin carries about $4,600 of metal — 92 times its face value.
The alloy recipe — 3% silver, ~5.3% copper — is a deliberate echo of the historic US 'coin gold' standard, chosen so the coins wear like their 1907 ancestors.

SPECIFICATIONS
Grading: where wear shows first
Bullion coins - handling marks matter only for collector grades. The 22k alloy resists scratches better than pure-gold competitors.
Never clean a coin. Ever. Cleaning permanently destroys collector value — dark original toning is worth more than shiny damage.
Counterfeit check
Faked, though less successfully than bars - the alloy's color and 33.93 g weight are hard to match with tungsten. Sigma verifier recommended for secondary-market buys.
Gear that settles it: an electromagnetic verifier, a calibrated scale and calipers — counterfeit basics.
QUESTIONS PEOPLE ACTUALLY ASK
Gold Eagle vs Gold Buffalo?
Eagle is 22k (durable, classic design, most liquid US gold); Buffalo is 24k pure (higher fineness, softer). Both contain exactly 1 ozt of gold. Liquidity edge: Eagle.
